Read 1 Joh 1:3 – 10
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Fellowship in the Light
The main purpose of the book of 1 John is to impart the Word of God, which brings life, as the Apostle John has learned, witnessed, and experienced. He shares this so that his disciples may have fellowship with fellow believers, with the Father, and with His Son, Jesus Christ (v.3).
God is light, and if we claim to have fellowship with Him, we must also walk in the light. Beware of the following false claims made by those who boast of their knowledge and fellowship with God:
Those who claim to have fellowship with God yet continue to walk in darkness, failing to practice the truth. Their moral conduct is inconsistent with the teachings of God’s Word.
Those who claim to be without sin or to have never sinned deceive themselves and deny the gospel truth—that Christ came as the sacrificial Lamb to die for our sins. Through the power of His resurrection, we have eternal life.
There is Forgiveness of Sin
We have been redeemed. Though we are told to “go and sin no more,” at times we may still succumb to temptation. However, 1 John 1:9 assures us that if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just. He will not only forgive us but also cleanse us from all unrighteousness. This is our blessed assurance.
Application
Continue to live in God’s righteousness. Never allow sins to derail us of our calling. We labour not by our own strength, but by the grace of God. We have been redeemed.
Prayer
Lord, I echo the prayer of Psalms 139:23-24 and ask that you will “Search me, O God, and know my heart today. Try me and know my thoughts I pray! And see if there be any wicked or grievous way in me. Lord help me and lead me in the way everlasting.”Amen.
1 John 1:3 - 10
1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life— 2 the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us— 3 that which we have seen and heard we proclaim also to you, so that you too may have fellowship with us; and indeed our fellowship is with the Father and with his Son Jesus Christ. 4 And we are writing these things so that our[a] joy may be complete.
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
