Read Matthew 17: 14 – 20

And He said to them, “Because of your meagre faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you (Matthew 17:20)

A man approached Jesus' disciples, seeking help for his son, who suffered severely from seizures, often falling into fire or water. However, the disciples were unable to heal him. When Jesus arrived, the man pleaded with Him for assistance. Jesus rebuked the demon, which immediately left the boy, and he was instantly healed (v.14-18).

The Need for Faith in Prayer

Jesus was disappointed with His disciples’ lack of faith. Prayer is more than just communicating with God. It is about believing and putting our trust in our Heavenly Father with matters that are dear to us. As we pray for our daily needs and the needs of others, we entered into our arena of faith with God and believe that He will act on our behalf (v.14-17).

The Act of Faith in Prayer

When His disciples asked, “why couldn’t we cast the demon out?” Jesus explained that it was their lack of faith that prevented them from fulfilling their responsibility. Jesus used the mustard seed as an illustration of how faith can grow incrementally. Hebrews 11:1 defines faith as being confident that God will do what He has promised. It is not wishful thinking, it is the absolute conviction that God is able to fulfil His promise to us. Our confidence in Him I never in vain, for He who promised is faithful (Hebrews 10:23) We simply need a believing faith that, when we ask, God will answer – even in the face of seemingly impossible challenges, like moving mountain (v.19-20).

  6. Share testimonies of God’s goodness to encourage others.

Prayer

Today, I want to pray in faith for this matter that is dear to me. I commit (describe the mountain that you want to move), Lord Jesus, I ask that you help me through this situation. Lead and guide me as I put my trust in You. In your name I pray. Amen.

Matthew 17:14 - 20

14 And when they came to the crowd, a man came up to him and, kneeling before him, 15 said, “Lord, have mercy on my son, for he has seizures and he suffers terribly. For often he falls into the fire, and often into the water. 16 And I brought him to your disciples, and they could not heal him.” 17 And Jesus answered, “O faithless and twisted generation, how long am I to be with you? How long am I to bear with you? Bring him here to me.” 18 And Jesus rebuked the demon, and it came out of him, and the boy was healed instantly. 19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?” 20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”
