Read Psalms 119:1-11
“How can a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed according to Your word. With my whole heart I have sought You;Oh, let me not wander from Your commandments! Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You.” (Psalms 119:9-11)
Being a new creation in Jesus Christ, we put aside the world value system to embrace God’s values. The Bible provides us with a clear understanding of God’s character and His call for us to be holy before Him. Psalms 119 echoed the Psalmist’s deep love and reverence for God’s Word. This entire passage elevates the Word of God as one that transforms, teaches and guides Christian to walk in righteousness.
The Key to Spiritual Growth
Blessedness are those who found the Word of God and choose to commit fully to walk daily with a passionate desire to obey God’s Word. The Psalmist commit to keep God’s testimonies, precepts and Statues. They can be understood as follow:
Testimonies that emphasize God's covenant relationship with His people and how He bears witness to the truth through His word. This establishes a faith relationship in putting our trust in the spoken word of God.
Precepts highlight the practical, hands-on application of God’s guidance. They are more focused on specific actions or moral behaviour. This provide guidance in establishing God’s value system in our lives.
Statutes are directives given by God that are meant to be obeyed and followed consistently. They represent God's established principles for righteous living. This form the foundation that differentiate us from worldly standard.
Application: Charting Our Spiritual Course
If we are not guided by the Word of God, we may chart our course according to the opinions of people or suggestion of culture. People don’t grow in Christ based on their involvement in spiritual activities. They grow by engaging the bible, mediating on it, thinking and rethinking God’s Word, and letting it be the ultimate authority in their lives. The outcome for such desire in hiding God’s Word in our heart is to prevent us from wandering away from His commandments and sin against Him.
Prayer
Teach me to read the bible daily. Let your Word be a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Be gentle towards me as I learn to live my life whole-heartedly in your word. Give me wisdom to walk in your path of righteousness. In Jesus name. Amen.
Psalms 119:1 -11
119 Blessed are those whose way is blameless,
who walk in the law of the Lord!
2 Blessed are those who keep his testimonies,
who seek him with their whole heart,
3 who also do no wrong,
but walk in his ways!
4 You have commanded your precepts
to be kept diligently.
5 Oh that my ways may be steadfast
in keeping your statutes!
6 Then I shall not be put to shame,
having my eyes fixed on all your commandments.
7 I will praise you with an upright heart,
when I learn your righteous rules.
8 I will keep your statutes;
do not utterly forsake me!9 How can a young man keep his way pure?
By guarding it according to your word.
10 With my whole heart I seek you;
let me not wander from your commandments!
11 I have stored up your word in my heart,
that I might not sin against you.
